RKC'S 2024 Winter Championships

The 2024 Winter Championship is an annual, internal competition that is open only to RKC Dojo members. This year it will be held on 8 June 2024 (Saturday) at the Rivonia Sports Club.


The following competition categories will take place this year:

  1. Kendo Kids Competition *** To Be Confirmed

  2. 2-Person Kata Competition

  3. Individual Kyu Grade Bogu Shiai

  4. Individual Dan Grade Bogu Shiai

  5. 3-Person Team Competition


FAMILY, FRIENDS and SPECTATORS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND! NO ENTRANCE FEE FOR SPECTATING!


The (draft) program for the day is as follows :

07:30 Hall set up

08:00 Registration begins

08:30 Group Warm Up session

08:50 Welcome & Opening Ceremony

09:00 IAIDO & JODO Demonstration

09:15 2-Person Kata Competition Begins

10:30 Kyu Grade Individual Shiai Begins

11:30 Kendo Kids Shiai Begins

12:00 Dan Grade Individual Shiai Begins

13:00 3-Person Team Shiai Begins

14:30 Awards & Closing Ceremony

15:00 Social event


Competition Rules:

There will be various rules for the various competitions:


For the 2-Person Kendo Kata Competition, the following guildlines are in place:

  • Open to all ages and members of all 3 of the arts at the RKC (Kendo Iaido and Jodo)

  • A team of 2-competitors is predetermined by the competitors and must reflect accordingly on the registration forms.

  • The competition bout will consist of performing 3 kata's that are selected by the competition committee before hand. This will change with each stage of the competition.

  • The Kata to know will be the "Bokto Ni Yoro Kendo Keiko-Ho Kata set (1-12); and possibly Nippon Kendo Kata (1-7)

  • 2 teams will compete simultaneously in front of 3 shimpans.

  • At the end of the bout, the one shimpan will call, "HANTAI", and the shimpan will simultaneously raise their flag for the team they thought performed the kata the best.


For the Kendo Kids in Bogu, Kyu Grade & Dan Grade shiai, the following rules will apply:

  • The matches will be done in accordance with the FIK Shiai rules, AS WELL AS the temporary FIK rules that are in place due to the pandemic.

  • Fights will be done as sanbon-shobu.

  • ALL fights will be max. 3-mins long. Finals will be 5 mins.

  • All dan grades and above might be required to be shimpan when possible.


For the 3-Person Team Shiai, the following rules will apply:

  • Team of 3 members (Dantai-shiai). Teams will be “randomised” prior to the event.

  • Each team will could only consist only of 1x 4th or 5th dan member. The rest of the team will be randomly selected.

  • Maximum of a 5-dan-total by all members; Minimum of 2 members; No age limit; lowest grade of team will fight CHUKEN position.

  • The matches will be done in accordance with the FIK Shiai rules, AS WELL AS the temporary FIK rules that are in place due to the pandemic.

  • Fights will be done as sanbon-shobu.

  • ALL fights will be max. 3-mins long. Finals will be 5 mins.

  • Matches are decided number of fights won then number of ippons scored If there is still a tie, matches will then be determined by ippon-shobu by the Daihyosha (team representative).

  • All dan grades and above might be required to be shimpan when possible.


Registration Fee & Link

The registration fee for this competition will be R150, which will cover the expenses incurred to host this event. Any surplus funds raised will be donated to the #SendRayAway campaign, our crowd-funding initiative to help Ray sensei achieve this dream of a Kendo 6th dan!
